Aquaporin 5 is a water channel protein. Aquaporins are a family of small integral membrane proteins related to the major intrinsic protein (MIP or AQP0). Aquaporin 5 plays a role in the generation of saliva, tears and pulmonary secretions . It is expressed in epithelia of lung, cornea, and various secretory glands; sites where extracellular osmolality is known to fluctuate . Expression of Aquaporin 5 may have pathophysiological implications attributed to a dysfunctional water regulation by Aquaporin 5such as endolymphatic hydrops (i.e. in Meniere's disease) or sensorineural hearing loss (i.e. in Sjogren's syndrome) . Up-regulation of Aquaporin 5 may be involved in differentiation of human gastric cancer cells .
