Autophagy is a degradation system of cytoplasmic proteins and organelles via formation of double-membrane vesicles called autophagosomes . Defects in autophagy are associated with various human diseases including cancer and neurodegeneration . ATG9 functions in autophagy as the only integral membrane protein that is essential for double-membrane vesicle formation . It is probably transported to the site of autophagosome formation, the pre-autophagosomal structure (PAS) . One member of the ATG9 family, ATG9A (Autophagy-related gene 9A), is an autophagy-related membrane protein that is required for autophagosome formation . Although ATG9A is ubiquitously detected, it is highly expressed in neurons of the central nervous system .
