Desmin are class-III intermediate filaments found in muscle cells, and are expressed during the formation of muscle cells or fibers. Cytoskeletal intermediate filaments (IFs) are constructed from two-chain alpha-helical coiled-coil molecules arranged on an imperfect helical lattice . In adult striated muscle they form a fibrous network connecting myofibrils to each other and to the plasma membrane from the periphery of the Z-line structures. Desmin mutations have been linked to familial cardiac and skeletal myopathy .
